Mary, Mother of the Church Mosaic

Project Details

The mosaic at Mary Mother of the Church Catholic Church in La Crosse, WI, was a collaborative effort led by our team at Inspired Artisans in Milwaukee, WI. We approached this project with great care, beginning with detailed sketches and a full-size drawing on paper to bring the vision to life. Each step of the process was thoughtfully planned to ensure the mosaic would serve as a beautiful and meaningful addition to the church.

For the mosaic, we selected Venetian glass tesserae, known for their rich texture and unique ability to capture light. Hand-blown in Venice, each piece of glass has its own distinct character, ensuring that no two tiles are alike. We are grateful to work with such a time-honored material, as its enduring quality means the colors will remain vibrant for generations to come.

It took months to complete the mosaic. Complex shapes, such as Our Lady’s face and the intricate ornamentation of her throne, were especially challenging. In total, over 60,000 tesserae, each approximately 3/8 of an inch square, were used. The final installation was completed in May 2024, with the mosaic installed on panels within a beautifully crafted custom frame.

Customer Story

I would imagine every artist wants the art to SHINE, but the artist also needs to balance this desire with the desire to make the customer happy. I didn't experience any conflict between these two desires. I appreciated the patience and help designing the mosaic. The communication was good and the responses were swift. Our parish is very pleased with our new mosaic!
